Who is the course aimed at?
Those commencing colposcopy and those wishing to maintain reaccreditation. Suitable for gynaecologists, pathologists, GU physicians and nurse practitioners.
BSCCP & CME approved (suitable for BSCCP colposcopy accreditation)
What is the course objective?
To inform students about the general objects of colposcopy which are in the diagnosis of cervical pre malignancy and early malignancy in women referred with either an abnormal cytological smear or where there is suspicion because of clinical signs and symptoms of possible early invasive cancer.
What is covered in the course?
The course is divided into two major topics mainly that of the diagnosis of cervical pre cancer and early cancer, and secondly in the treatment of these conditions. The first day of the two-day course is devoted to the diagnosis and the second day to treatment. This mirrors the clinical situation in that treatment must always be preceded by diagnosis.
On the first day again the abnormal findings of the colposcopy are always preceded by the normal findings and normal features of the cervix in the form of a discussion of the anatomy, pathology and physiology of the normal cervix. Once the clinician is aware of the normal then the abnormal findings can be better understood.
Days one and two are also divided roughly into theoretical, visual and video discussions in the morning sessions which involves the whole course, and then in the afternoons the course is broken up into two or three groups with experienced clinicians discussing individual cases. The cytology report of the individual patient is first of all presented, then the colposcopy is considered and finally any pathology resulting from the examination is reviewed. Treatment especially on the second day is then discussed with the tutor and the group. This again mirrors the clinical situation within a colposcopy clinic.
